Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):
So wünsch ich nun ein gute Nacht
der Welt und laß sie fahren/
ob sie mir gleich viel Jammers macht/
Gott wird mich wohl bewahren:
Ich meynt/ die Welt wär eitel Geld/
befind es nun viel anders
English
So now I bid good-night
to the world and let it go,
though it fills me with grief.
God will keep me safe:
I thought the world to be vain riches;
now I see it quite differently.
Origination:
Melody: Lüneburg 1642, contrafactum of Ach Amaryllis hast du denn die Wälder
Text: Philipp Nicolai (1556-1608)
