Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):

Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten/
und hoffet auf ihn allezeit/
der wird ihn wunderlich erhalten
in aller Noth und Traurigkeit.
Wer Gott dem Allerhöchsten traut/
der hat auf keinen Sand gebaut.

English

Whoever lets dear God prevail,
and hopes in him at all times,
will be wonderfully upheld by him
in all distress and sorrow.
Whoever trusts in God the most high,
has not built on sand.
