Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):

Christus der uns selig macht/
kein Böß hat begangen/
der ward für uns in der Nacht/
als ein Dieb gefangen/
geführt für gottlose Leut/
und fälschlich verklaget/
verlacht/ verhöhnt und verspeyt/
wie denn die Schrift saget.

English

Christ, who makes us blessed,
has committed no evil;
he was for us in the night
like a thief arrested,
led before godless people
and falsely accused,
derided, mocked and spat upon,
as the scripture says.
