Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):

O Jesu! wie ist dein Gestalt
in Marter hoch und mannigfalt
mit Wunden tief verheeret?*
Der Leib von Heiligkeit so groß/
am Creutz ist ausgespannet bloß/
hat seinen Glantz verzehret*:
Hertzlich/ schmertzlich ist dein Liebe/
heiß und trübe/ reich von Gaben/
die dich an das Holtz erhaben.

* verheer’t, verzehr’t

English

O Jesu! How is it that your figure,
in torments great and many,
has been ravaged by deep wounds?
The body of such great holiness
is stretched out naked on the cross,
has used up its radiance.
Heartfelt, painful is your love,
passionate and woeful, rich in gifts
that have raised you on the wood.
