Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):

Wir gläuben all an einen Gott/
Schöpffer Himmels und der Erden/
der sich zum Vater gegeben hat/
daß wir seine Kinder werden/
er will uns allzeit ernähren/
Leib und Seel auch wohl bewahren/
allem Unfall will er wehren/
kein Leid soll uns wiederfahren/
er sorget für uns/
hüt und wacht/
es stehet alles in seiner Macht.

We all believe in one God,
creator of heaven and earth,
who has shown himself as the Father
that we might become his children.
He will nourish us at all times,
well preserving both body and soul.
He will protect from all misfortune;
no harm shall befall us.
He will look after us,
guard and watch:
everything is under his command.

Melody: Johann Walter (1496-1570) – Wittenberg 1524, after Breslau 1417
Text: 1523/24, Martin Luther (1483-1546), after a Leipzig manuscript c.1400
