Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):

Wo Gott zum Hauß nicht giebt sein Gunst/
so arbeitt iedermann umsonst/
wo Gott die Stadt nicht selbst bewacht/
so ist umsonst der Wächter Wacht.

English

If God does not give his favour to the house,
then everyone works for nothing.
If God himself does not guard the city,
then is the guardian’s watch for nothing.

Melody: Gastel – Zwickau 1525
