Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):
Weltlich Ehr und zeitlich Gut/
Wollust und alle Übermuth/
ist eben wie ein Graß/
aller Pracht und stoltzer Ruhm
zerfällt wie ein Wiesen-Blum/
O Mensch/ bedenck eben das/
und versorge dich noch baß.
English
Worldy honour and ephemeral goods,
lust and all presumptuous pride,
are exactly like a blade of grass.
Pride of glory and of fame
fall apart like a meadow flower.
O man, think on this,
and be nourished by the more profound.
Origination:
Melody: Vögelin – Leipzig 1563, adapted Melchior Vulpius, 1604
Text: Michael Weiße (c.1488-1534)
