Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):
Wer Gott vertraut / hat wohl gebaut/
im Himmel und auf Erden :/:
Wer sich verläßt auf Jesum Christ/
dem muß der Himmel werden.
Darum auf dich all Hofnung ich
gantz fest und steif thu setzen/
Herr Jesu Christ/ mein Trost du bist/
in Todes-Noth und Schmertzen :/:
English
He who trusts in God, has made a strong abode
in heaven and on earth;
he who relies on Jesus Christ,
his will the heavens be.
Therefore on you all hope I set,
right firm and fixed.
Lord Jesu Christ, my comfort thou art,
in mortal anguish and pain.

Melody and text: Erfurt 1571/72 – Joachim Magdeburg (1525-c.1587), melody adapted by
