Text known to Bach (Weimar 1713):
Wies Gott gefällt/ so gfällt mirs auch/
und laß mich gar nichts irren/
ob mich zu Zeiten beist der Rauch/
und wenn sich schon verwirren
all Sachen gar/ ich weiß fürwahr/
Gott wird zuletzt wohl richten/
wie ers will han/ so muß es gahn/
solls seyn/ so seys ohn Dichten.
English
What pleases God, it pleases me too,
and let me not go astray.
Though sometimes I am choked by smoke,
and if I am confused
by things around me, I know in truth,
God will at the last set things right.
As he will have it, so will it go.
It must be, so be it pure and simple.
